آلودگی محیط زیست و خطرهای آن از چالش های مهم امروزی بشر و دیگر موجودات زنده می باشد. هم چنین افزایش جمعیت، توسعه فناوری و تولیدات صنعتی می تواند سبب عدم توجه به ایمنی محیط زیست شود و به دنبال آن آلودگی اکوسیستم رادر پی داشته باشد.
از این رو بررسی فلزات سمی موجود در خاک و آب با هدف پایش سلامت آن ها و همچنین تعیین قوانین و دستورالعمل های مناسب ضروری می نماید. بررسی سنتی توزیع فضایی غلظت فلزات سمی توسط نمونه برداری و آنالیزهای آزمایشگاهی متعدد صورت می گیرد که به نوبه خود بسیار زمان بر، پر هزینه و با کارایی کم است.
از تکنیک های مدرن برای پایش مناطق آلوده، می توان به تکنیک های دورسنجی اشاره نمود. که هدف از استفاده از این تکنیک با صرفه بودن هزینه و در کمترین زمان ممکن است. که یکی از اهداف این پژوهش تا با چگونگی استفاده از این تکنیک در پایش فلزات سمی بیشتر آشنا شد.و همچنین به بررسی روش و مطالعاتی که از آن برای پایش فلزات سمی در محیط زیست استفاده نموده اند پرداخته می شود.
